After earning a master's degree at Columbia, Kaufman taught in the New York City public schools for three decades. Bel graduated magna cum laude from Hunter College at age 22. ![]() She is the granddaughter of Sholem Aleichem, and her mother Lyalya Kaufman was a regular columnist for the Yiddish Forverts.
